Dukie98 won the Stat GM First Pitch Classic with an 18–3 record across six Best-of-5 series. The seed says the run was an upset. The games say it was no accident.

The first champion did not survive the bracket. Dukie98 controlled it, one close game at a time.

The bracket supplied the volatility a first tournament needed. Lower-seeded players won 21 of the 63 series, including 11 first-round upsets. Seventeen series reached 3–2. #15 seed david_kunz delivered the largest seed upset by knocking out #2 Jlh742123, while #14 dbacks beat #3 Benwdean in five games.

The top of the bracket still held together long enough to create a compelling finish. #1 seed Curseofbalboni reached the Championship. #2 seeds maxk20 and Mlbman215 reached the Semifinals. The fourth semifinalist—and eventual champion—was #4 seed Dukie98.

Dukie98's road through the bracket

Dukie98 opened against #13 madturtle7 and won 3–1. From there the run accelerated: three consecutive sweeps carried the #4 seed through #5 caleb_aufdenberg, #1 nas, and #7 Randy.

The semifinal finally interrupted the sweep streak. Mlbman215 won Game 2 by one projected win, 134–133. Dukie98 answered by winning Game 3 on the Overall Rating tiebreak after both lineups projected to 128 wins, then clinched Game 4 by a single win, 133–132.

The loudest single result came in the Round of 32. Dukie98 produced a tournament-best 145 projected wins in a 145–130 victory over caleb_aufdenberg. But that runaway score was not the defining feature of the title run.

Eleven of Dukie98's 21 counted games finished with the projected records equal or separated by one win. The champion kept landing on the right side of the smallest margins.

Series of the Tournament: KidCharlemagne vs. MonkeyTest

The Championship carried the most weight. The Round of 16 series between #1 KidCharlemagne and #4 MonkeyTest carried the most drama.

Their five-game series began with two projected-record ties—and the Overall Rating tiebreak sent one game to each player. KidCharlemagne took Game 1 after both lineups projected to 118 wins. MonkeyTest answered in Game 2 after both reached 140, the highest combined projected-win total of any game in the series.

MonkeyTest moved ahead with a 104–101 win in Game 3. KidCharlemagne responded 125–120 in Game 4. Four games produced a 2–2 series, and the fifth was not ceremonial: it decided who advanced.

MonkeyTest won the decider 115–110 and carried the upset into the Quarterfinals. The series had every version of pressure the format can create: two tiebreak decisions, an exchange of leads, an answer with elimination approaching, and a winner-take-all Game 5.

That is the Series of the Tournament.

The championship tightened before it broke

The final paired the bracket's highest seed with its hottest entrant. Curseofbalboni struck first, winning Game 1 by a single projected win, 121–120.

Dukie98 answered 123–122 in Game 2. Game 3 was even tighter: both lineups projected to 120 wins, and Dukie98 won the Overall Rating tiebreak by one tenth of a point. After three games, the entire Championship had been decided by two one-win margins and the narrowest rating edge available on the displayed scale.

Game 4 finally created daylight. Dukie98 won 118–114 to close the series 3–1 and become Stat GM's first bracket champion.

The final score looks comfortable. The path to it was not. One different result in either of the middle games would have changed the shape of the entire series.

What the first bracket revealed

The First Pitch Classic showed why a series format belongs in Stat GM.

A single great lineup can win a Challenge. A tournament run asks for repeated solutions to different shared boards. The best seed still matters, but it cannot solve six rounds in advance. A player has to absorb a bad result, win close comparisons, and keep building complete lineups when the available seasons change.

Dukie98 did all of it. The champion produced the tournament's highest counted projected-win total, swept three straight rounds, eliminated two #1 seeds, and went 6–2 over the semifinal and Championship when the margins became smallest.

The first bracket gave Stat GM an upset run, a legitimate heavyweight finalist, a five-game classic in the middle rounds, and a champion who earned the trophy over 21 counted games.
